NOTE: Some arguments might have only one major reason (explained in detail), while others could have many (with less detail).CLAIM: The thing you're trying to convince your audience of.
REASONS: The things that prove your point (claim).
ASSUMPTIONS: The things the audience must believe in order to agree with your reasoning (reasons).
I. Claim: BYU students should adhere to the standards of the Honor Code whether they are on campus or not, out of their own integrity, not simply for the fear of being reported to the Honor Code office.
ReplyDeletea. Reason 1: BYU students agreed to abide by the rules when they were first accepted to the University. They knew what would be expected of them under the Honor Code.
b. Reason 2: Stronger consequences for failing to follow the honor code regulations when off campus would ensure fairness to those who do follow the rules.
i. Many people who apply to BYU do not get accepted. It is not fair that people are accepted and do not obey the Honor Code when there are applicants that are turned away who may follow the Honor Code more closely.
c. Assumption: If the standards of the Honor Code were more strictly followed by students at all times, BYU would be a more respectable university because of the integrity of its students. Those who care about the standards of the Honor Code and the atmosphere they create may have a greater chance to attend BYU.
Claim: There is no such thing as a "non-dancing" show in musical theater.
ReplyDeleteReason: Musical Theater is very much a visual art, and without proper emphasis on the movement of the show, the theatrical production's influence on an audience greatly decreases.
Assumption: All musical theater productions are done with the intent to move the audience. All musical theater is intended to be aesthetically pleasing.
Claim: Occupy Wallstreet is not a moral movement that citizens should participate in.
ReplyDeleteReason: approximately $35,000 per year is the top 1% of the world. A great deal of the people who participate in the Occupy movement fall above this line.
Assumption: Demanding more when you're in the top 1% is selfish.
Reason: By their fruits shall ye know them. The Occupy movement has attracted sex, drugs, and lack of sanitation to public areas.
Assumption: Sex, drugs, and doing your business in the middle of the street is not a good thing to be doing.
